Maranatha became involved with this church plant back in June of 2008 through a relationship with Independent Bible Church in Martinsburg, WV. The pastor of Independent Bible Church is Mark Johnson, our own Erica Kurcsak’s father. Due to this affiliation, a relationship began. The staff from Independent Bible Church came from Martinsburg to spend a day with the Maranatha staff. Founded in 2001, the Refuge of Hope was an outgrowth from a chapel ministry and soup kitchen which began serving the downtown Canton community in the mid-1980s under the name Open Door Chapel. Currently this inner-city, faith-based, non-denominational Christian mission serves as a men’s homeless shelter offering overnight housing (26-28 men), showers, spiritual guidance, accountability, and hot meals (5 full meals weekly to an average of 75 people at each meal). Dennis D’Augostine is currently Director of Coal Mine youth ministries in Scranton, PA. The youth ministry leadership team was considering launching a dynamic new Bible-teaching church to reach entire families. After much prayer, research, and seeking of godly counsel, they were convinced the Lord of Harvest was directing this team to start Steamtown Church in Scranton. They opened their doors in 2008.
